OneLayer is proud to have been named a Sample Vendor in the 2025 Gartner® Report for Emerging Tech: Emergence Cycle for CPS Security.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) come in many forms, from manufacturing OT to healthcare’s smart hospitals to the complex IoT that powers smart airports and seaports. In this report, Gartner surveys where products and approaches to CPS security currently are in relation to the growing needs and demands of the involved industries – and where they are headed.

Private cellular networks are increasingly used as an implementation framework that powers complex cyber-physical systems, and the Gartner report relates to many aspects of security that are relevant to private cellular networks.

Among their critical insights, the Gartner expert analysts note that CPS security approaches have progressed along a continuum from physical isolation-based security, to network-centric security, to asset-centric security.

OneLayer was founded – and its private cellular network security platform designed – based on the understanding that the key to securing complex cyber-physical systems lies at the asset level. Security measures at the network level are inherently broad. The inability to precisely customize security measures per device type, usage and system function leads to security that is too constrictive and compromises efficiency (the very reason why organizations implement private cellular networks for CPS), or too lax and puts the organization’s security and continuity at risk, or both simultaneously (depending on the asset and function). Only the ability to use the asset itself as the basis for security policies can achieve the optimal balance of efficiency and security.

The Gartner report points out how there is an “increasing number of connected industrial devices leveraging wireless connectivity across many industries.” Sectors mentioned by name include “manufacturing, utilities, energy and transportation” as well as “automotive, healthcare and government.” A “vertical-specific wireless security approach” is one of the implications drawn from this reality by the Gartner expert analysts.

OneLayer has always been aware of the needs of different industries when it comes to private cellular network security: both the needs that are common to all sectors, and those that differ because of the nature of the industry or different regulatory requirements. While our OneLayer Bridge platform is always the foundation of our security solution, vertical-specific customizations are an integral part of our development process. We take multiple industry regulatory compliance standards into account, including (but in no way limited to) ISO, NERC CIP, HIPAA, ISA, IEC, NIST and Purdue.

The Gartner expert analysts state that an industry demand driver will be the need for “full, reliable network coverage for machines, sensors and equipment” and that will be “particularly with 5G as it offers lower cost than Wi-Fi.”

OneLayer has long realized that private 5G/LTE cellular networks are the trajectory that CPS for large, complex operations is most likely to take. The scalability, high reliability and ultra-low latency of 5G/LTE networks best fulfills the smart operational needs of most sectors. That’s why OneLayer is designed specifically for 5G/LTE cellular network security.

OneLayer is pleased to see that the recognition of the need for developed wireless asset security is growing among organizations that use private cellular networks, and is gratified to have been recognized in this Gartner report as a Sample Vendor for this important emerging market.
